Thangalaan (2024) South Indian Full Movie Review :

Why do we study history? What is in the past that helps the present, and understand the future? Some say we read history to avoid mistakes, and not repeat the faults of our ancestors. Some say we read history to learn of our legacy, and how we are just the pale shadows of the past. And then, some ask whose story is history? There is an oft-quoted African proverb that says the hunter will always be the hero until the lion tells the story. In every possible way, tries to tell the story of the invisibilised, the overlooked, the oppressed, and the ones left behind. In his latest endeavour, which is also his boldest attempt at storytelling, Ranjith takes up the story of how people were exploited to mine gold from the Kolar Gold Fields. Thangalaan is Ranjith’s first direct attempt at revisionist history, and he ropes in concepts like multigenerational memories and magical realism to reiterate that often the oppressed are forced to choose between ‘lesser of the two evils.’

Thangalaan begins with Vikram, the titular character, waking up from a dream; a dream that has been haunting him for years. A dream that features the sorceress Aarathi (a brilliant Malavika Mohanan) and a search for identity. It is this quest that makes him and his family the only land-owning family in the village of Veppur in North Arcot. Not wanting to allow Thangalaan and his family to be independent, the village zamindar makes them his bonded labourers by using nefarious means. But this quest for identity never stops, and when a silver-tongued Britisher asks the Veppur villagers to join him on his quest to find the famed gold mines, which the villagers believe to be haunted, Thangalaan is the first to volunteer. However, Ranjith and his team of writers aren’t just invested in the life and times of Thangalaan. They also allow other characters the space to grow and express themselves.

Pasupathy plays a character who anoints himself as a Brahmin hoping for a place in Vaikunta. He believes this identity will give him a life better than being stuck in Veppur as a bonded labourer. He believes in their God in the hope that it will allow him a place in their heaven after his death. Then, there is the Britisher Clement (a terrific Daniel Caltagirone), who wants to find a place in history as the man who discovered the mines. There is Gangamma , who prides on being a mother but wants to be respected as a wife, and a woman. These characters’ search for their identity, and identifying the right ones is the bedrock of Thangalaan.

The Killer (2024) Full English Action Movie Review:
"The Killer" (2024) is a disappointing remake that fails to capture the magic of John Woo's original 1989 masterpiece. Despite being directed by Woo himself, this version feels like a pale imitation, lacking the intensity and emotional depth that made the original so iconic.

Firstly, the plot feels uninspired and predictable. The gender-swapped characters and new setting in Paris do little to add freshness to the story. Nathalie Emmanuel's portrayal of Zee, the assassin, is competent but lacks the charisma needed to carry the film. The dynamic between Zee and the cop, Sey (played by Omar Sy), falls flat, missing the tension and complexity that could have made their interactions compelling.

The action sequences, while technically proficient, lack the innovative flair that Woo is known for. They come across as formulaic and fail to deliver the adrenaline-pumping excitement that fans of the genre expect. He kept doing the birds thing. News flash Woo: things have moved on quite a lot. The film's pacing is another major issue, with long stretches of dull, uninspired dialogue that do little to advance the plot or develop the characters.

Moreover, the script feels like it has been through too many rewrites, resulting in a disjointed narrative that lacks coherence and passion. The moral dilemmas faced by the characters are handled superficially, making it hard to invest in their journeys or care about their outcomes.

In conclusion, "The Killer" (2024) is a forgettable remake that does a disservice to the original. It lacks the heart, innovation, and excitement that made John Woo's 1989 film a classic. Fans of the original will likely be disappointed, and newcomers may find little to keep them engaged.

Sector 36 (2024) Full Hindi Movie Review:

Corruption is one of the worst sins that a public official could do because their job is to uphold the people under their care, and when they obfuscate that sacred oath for money, power, or friendship, everyone suffers. Corruption can happen anywhere, but what happens when you target the most vulnerable members of society who have even less of a voice than ever? Well, you have a recipe for disaster.

So, set the scene, in Section 36 of Delhi, works Sub Inspector Ram Charan Pandey (Deepak Dobriyal), a thoroughly corrupt police officer. Who is more interested in lecturing people on the Third Law of Motion than actually helping people. But when a girl’s hand turns up in the sewers, it puts into focus that there is a killer on the loose, not that the police want that. But that is what Prem Singh (Vikrant Massey) is doing, focusing on the most vulnerable members of society. He would have continued to get away with it, given the police’s incompetence, but one day, he tries to take the daughter of someone important, and ignorance is no longer an option.

What I liked about this film is that we explored two very different aspects of character and motivation. Inspector Pandey was perfectly happy to sit on his hands and do nothing, take the kickbacks, and then pontificate if someone dared to push back against him. However, when the rubber hit the road, and it affected his own family, he was positioned with a choice. Continue to do nothing or to stand up against the powers that he had helped get rich off? You would always hope that someone in a position of power like that would have a backbone, but it was fascinating to watch someone grow one when it actually counted.

Meanwhile, we have our serial murderer Prem, who is the most fascinating character in all the film, thanks in part to the performance by Vikrant Massey. This might be one of the most menacing characters that I have seen on the screen in quite a while, given how he slips between being earnest, charming, and ruthless. It is clear that he is taking big swings in his performance, and it is deeply uncomfortable at times. But what was interesting was the layers that we found with the character, which were slowly stripped away as the movie progressed.

At the heart of this film is an exploration of the abuse of power, where childhood friendship is used as a cover to do some genuinely deplorable things, which is even before we get to the central subject matter covered in the film. The way power is so easily used to protect the powerful was chilling to watch, mainly because even in my own country, it has happened, and indeed, it is likely still happening. [SPOILERS] I don’t think this film would have worked as well as it did without how it ended, which honestly shocked me, and I am glad they [almost] committed to it. [/SPOILERS]

From a production side of things, everything looked fantastic, with a real eye for composition appearing in places. The musical score was all over the cello, which is my favourite instrument, and I very much appreciated that choice. The supporting cast was all great, and I want to shout out Varun Bhiletia, who had a challenging job playing Ali. While there were a lot of race and class touchstones that an Indian audience would be able to glean a lot easier, I think anyone should be able to follow what is going on. It was also an interesting choice to set the film in the 1990s, which I think helped because it reduced communication opportunities for all involved.

In the end, do we recommend Sector 36? Well, it deals with some challenging subjects, which is probably going to hold back a lot of people from watching this. However, I was fascinated by the performances, and the narrative did keep me engaged from start to finish.
